Lt. Walter Albert "Toby" Yeulett, DFC

Lt. Yeulett, "Toby" to his family, was my great uncle and I remember seeing as a child some photos of him in World War One and also being shown his Distinguished Flying Cross. In April 2000 (after a visit to the RAF Museum) it occurred to me that I had no idea for what his DFC had been awarded. I decided to try and find out, not realising quite what I was letting myself in for.......

At the time, I had no idea of what it was that I was about to start. I thought I'd be happy to find a record of his citation but as more and more information surfaced it turned into a major project which has now occupied me for nearly three years. On the pages linked below you will find the results of my research much of which has come as quite an astonishing surprise as I discovered that he'd died on what turned out to be a very famous mission indeed. Three years on and information continues to arrive and therefore I feel that this unplanned project may never actually be entirely complete! It's lead to me meeting some great people, reading some fascinating books and articles and eventually even got me flying a plane for myself!

Many of the WWI photographs featured on the pages below belong to my family and I would ask that they are not to be used or published elsewhere without our express permission. We would not withhold such permission unreasonably, but please ask first.  Thank you in advance for your co-operation. Due to many of them having been "stolen" already, I have had to add copyright statements to them, for which I apologise but there are just too many impolite people out there these days. You can e-mail me here if you would like to see the original pictures or any of the other material that I have collected. There are a large number of people whom I would like to thank for their help, and I would urge you to visit the links and references page. Please drop me a line if you find this site interesting.
